About the Session


Anshika Varma will be in conversation with Astitva Photo Team, Garima Agarwal and Jai Thakur. They will discuss Anshika's engagements with photography, including her experience as a photographer, curator, editor and now as a librarian and publisher as the founder of Offset Projects.

The session flow will be as follows:

3:45 PM: Reporting time

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Introduction, Artist Talk and Q & A

6:00 PM - 7:00 PM: Open Interaction hour over chai - coffee and snacks


About the Speaker

Anshika Varma is a photographer, editor, curator and publisher. Her practice is driven by an interest in personal, collective and mythical histories. Combining her curiosity to study cultural and social evolution with storytelling, her work often looks at the emotional connections between the individual and their environment. With photography and book-making, she is interested in exploring the intricate relationship between memory and object as markers of one’s identity. 


She is the founder of Offset Projects, an initiative working extensively on creating modes of access and creation within the photographic language with a focus on voices from South Asia and the Global South through activations from its public access library, workshops, residencies, artist talks, curated reading rooms and collaborative exercises in publishing.


Her works have been shown at Photoworks, UK, Chennai Photo Biennale, Kochi Biennale, New York Biennale for Contemporary Art, India Art Fair and the Florence Biennial.


Her curatorial works and projects have been part of photography festivals such as Chennai Photo Biennale, Angkor Photo Festival, Photo Kathmandu, Ffotogallery, Diffusion Festival. She has also served on the jury for Photographer of the Year Awards- Asia and research grants by 10x10 Photobooks, USA. 


As the curator at Offset, she has developed engagements with a focus on South Asian visual language perceived through the lens. She has been invited to speak within educational institutions and festival programming on subjects of photography, publishing and the growth of the visual language in South Asia and continues to teach on these subjects through guest lectures at institutions such as YaleNUS (Singapore), Photography Studies College (Melbourne) and Ashoka University (India). Her writing has been part of publications such as Aperture Magazine, Photobooks & and the Alkazi Foundation.


Her practice is defined through processes of collective participation and creation of work through engagements in multidisciplinary spaces.
